a small dream that means everything

better to hang than hanging on
for some of us
if I can't set the sky on fire
I'll just burn inside
better to make rubbish
than competent whitewash
for some of us
if I could change anything
I'd change myself
and you too, and it would be great
we'd actually relate
and there would be
no big thing about it
because it is really easy
when two people both let it be.

there are paths that return a value
but I hope we don't get killed on the way
we have to start this
and it takes more than one
tangled and torn apart
the wound of separation is their specialty
but they cry out in pain
in the middle of the night, too
it's in everything they do
but they keep going
down that dark alleyway
deciding to be the fearsome thing
because they're afraid

I decided long ago to never be the wolf
in the darkness
I could have been very good at it
maybe one of the best
it's in my nature
my fangs are very sharp
but they shall never again taste blood
and I can only hope that there's hope
and we haven't gotten to that point
where the sheep can't make a comeback

in the long run if we make it far enough
the iron citadel will build its own undoing
too many keys floating around to keep us all locked up
and they have to make more each day
it's part of what they do
we just need to remember to walk out the doors
when they swing loose
and that's why I want to be there
to take you by the hand
and walk you out into the sun myself
you weren't meant for bars and grey porridge
but for apples gleaming in the open sky
and I hope you remember that when the day comes.
