I think a lot of what's behind the whole "I love/hate the internet"/goon/b/LOL4life thing is actually a loss of perspective.
These are people who have forgotten the Iron Law of Crap*, and they are disappointed that the internet didn't become the geek paradise that they hoped it would be. They were sold a bill of goods by the federal reserve and the media in the 90s and now they're bitter.

* "90 percent of EVERYTHING is crap"
