it's still hard for me to fathom ... some guy walking around DC with a rifle and not getting noticed. sure, he (illegally) parked close to the museum, but did Mr Senior Citizen then *sprint* from his vehicle to the entrance? story goes, his victim, the security guard, held the door open for him. i guess the rifle was wrapped up or something:

"say, what do you have there, sir?"
"curtain rods."
"fine, have a nice day..."

i've been to DC two or three times since th'9/11 attacks, once quite recently. in your "federal" areas, of which the Museum is pretty much a part, the security is really quite impressive.

we had a neo-Nazi here in the Valley not so long ago. he came down from Maryland to stir up shit. some of his shit-stirring involved publishing the names and addresses of some federal jurors and "suggesting," over the internet, that they be killed. he was sent to Illinois to face trial and it was decided that he had ... exceeded the elastic limits of free speech.
