it's funny how people haven't become crazy anti-car freaks the way they have with drugs, since almost everyone knows someone that died in a car accident.
I don't think its analogous at all unless you're talking about work=having a job
"work" is something that everyone does. Its work to brush your teeth. its work to eat an apple. its work to take a shit. if you don't want to have a job, you can in fact, find other ways to make a living, but you will always work. That's not at all a bad thing. most peopel keep jobs they don't like because its actually LESS work than trying to live without said job (or any job) I dunno about you but frankly I'm not fond of picking berries, scrubbing clothes in a stream or pounding my own grains into flour just sos I can (eventually) have a loaf of bread. hell some days I don't even want to bake the bread myself.
I'm totally into the pioneer spirit and i love doing things the "old fashioned way" by scratch sometimes but the reason we have so many conveniances nowadays is because opting out of drudgework leaves us more time and energy to pursue loftier goals.
Such it is with cars. The reason we have cars and they are so popular is because, well that's what works best for most people. I can take my whole family of four kids and a husband in my minivan to go visit our extended family (mine are an hour drive, his are 5hours drive) and still go back home within the same week. Couldn't do that with horse and buggy and frankly I don't want to think about toting my 28lb toddler everywhere in order to get some food. Ugh.
I don't know about everyone else but I LIKE cars. I LIKE work. Frees me up to do more interesting things.
Yeah, it's funny, until you chase the money. Then it's not so mysterious at all. This is classic McArchon influence.
In the first case, you have a car industry that has spent a century inundating society with its vision of a car for every family, to the point where urban planners and city policymakers made transportation planning around the automobile.
In the second case, you have a prison-industrial complex which has found the War on Some Drugs to be extremely profitable.
agreed, it's totally different. cars don't change the quality of your interaction with people, they only intensify it.
if you have a car, you're giving yourself the illusion of being in control, and we as a state/society give the big thumbs-up, otay to that. if you have drugs, you're giving yourself the illusion of being out of control, to which we say, nuts.
The way I see it is that there are billions of safe drivers out there. There are times when things get out of control by accident or by some drunk person. With drugs you know you are wanting something to get crazy.
It's not a different thing to people whose line of thinking goes "I know [x number of drug deaths, or particular situ re. drugs" therefore "drugs bad." Those same people are *not* likely to say "I know [x number of car deaths, or particular re. cars" therefore "cars bad." I think the point she's making is that that line of thinking is applied inconsistently, *not* that it's the only line of thinking. For the people who do the logic she outlined, "I know [x number of blow jobs] re. drugs" therefore "drugs bad" is NOT part of their syllogism.
I'm not arguing against the diffs you bring up, but you're skipping the (il)logic she's pointing out in one enthymeme and bringing in a completely different enthymeme. The point is about logic before it's about drugs.
hahaha! That's an entirely different tact...I was sitting it on my desk next to the keyboard and mouse with an inventory spreadsheet opened up on screen.
I come at it from a slightly different perspective. While I don't know the exact environmental impact of the drugs I use (multiplied by the times/amounts I use them), I do know the environmental impact of my car, and it's a burden that weighs on me every time I drive.
It's unfortunately due to the fact that people have been programmed to react one way to drugs and another way to cars (or, as others in the thread pointed out, to work, etc.). People are stupid. As usual.
