Watched Cloverfield tonight. It was better than I expected it to be. For all the tropers out there, I like how it subverted a lot of expected monster movie tropes, including the "Person of Color Friend Dies" thing.
I LOVE THAT MOVIE. I watch it as often as I can. "Wait wait wait- YOU know about Superman? Are you familiar with Garfield?" HAHAHAHA!
This is how I always describe it: "For the first fifteen minutes, you're like, 'God, I hate these fucking yuppies, I wish a monster would show up and terrify them for a while and then kill them,' and then for the rest of the movie, EXACTLY THAT HAPPENS."
I like Imi's response to Cloverfield, because it also helps me like it more. I still think, though (annoying film geeky-wise, anyway) that it ends up playing kinda generically anyway, paying homage to certain tropes while still keeping them in full force without a wink, even. Also, doesn't the person of color die? She gets all upset about her boyfriend being dead and then she dies. I guess not first, though.
