(1:10:06 AM) annamnesis: this is the funny thing though
(1:10:21 AM) annamnesis: most "christians" seem very defensive about their beliefs
(1:10:35 AM) annamnesis: even though most people in the US are "christian"

It's rare to find a church these days that prefers to let its tradition speak for itself, rather than trotting out the old we're-persecuted dynamic.

In America, Christianity has become a specialized type of nationalism. It's a Christian nation and God is behind us making us the greatest nation in the world. It's only right that we should spread democracy to Iraq and Afghanistan, since God has made us the most powerful nation in the world. It's the might-makes-right argument with a subtle twist that brings in the old, "we're the ones being persecuted dynamic."

The defensiveness comes in because the whole christian polish helps deflect the guilt we would otherwise feel for driving multiple cars per household while the rest of the world goes hungry.
