very interesting and helpful. i see a number of the predictions already coming to pass here. the craigslist economy grows by leaps and bounds to the point of independent hustlers of all stripes judging potential cities by the activity in the listings for their field. (it's how i chose my latest vehicle purchase with an upgrade path beyond petrofuel). garage sale activity seems to be at an all-time high, even in affluent neighborhoods who were previously above allowing anything below an Estate Sale to be advertised.
the article is helpful cause the only stories big enough to get my attention are the utter collapses. Soviet Union, Argentina, etc. this gives a lot of great information on other things to be prepared for. (i had already sworn off air travel since 2005 simply for how far the whole "security" disincentive has been played out)
my soon to be wife and i have even changed our honeymoon plans from international flying to a domestic roadtrip that may reach up into canada at the furthest, weather permitting.
oh and a recent local stat, apparently thanks to "Click It or Ticket" and the post-2001 explosion of officers patrolling the streets, 1 in 10 Texans now have active warrants for their arrest related to unpaid tickets. local property tax is still going up 10-20% yoy like the housing market hasn't stalled out.
An interesting read. My biggest problem was in disagreeing that some of his points that imply they are a "bad" thing are really all that "bad". E.g.:
"Devolution is both the process of degeneration and the surrender of governmental powers from central authorities to local authorities."
Found in his first paragraph, I see the surrender of gummit powers from central to local as a very good thing. And "degeneration", of course, is a very loaded subjective judgment.
