"A sense of duty is useful in work, but offensive in personal relations. People wish to be liked, not be endured with patient resignation."

- Bertrand Russell

Please keep this in mind. Better to abandon someone altogether than insult them with some sort of obvious "noblesse oblige".

Eh. I don't totally agree. I think it is probably best to ask the person whether they prefer abandonment to dutiful toleration. I know what certain of my relatives answers to that question would be, for instance, and is why I continue to demonstrate filial piety toward them despite my personal preference.

Also, I think it is perfectly natural to go through periods in which one merely tolerates those near to them. At least it is natural for me. Human emotions are tidal in nature, and it is likely that if one sits still through a period of disenchantment with their fellows, warm regards will have an opportunity to resurface at a later date. This happy circumstance cannot occur if one has withdrawn entirely, or at least it is substantially less likely.

Certainly, I have been a trial to my partners' patience from time to time, especially in the last two years of school. I am extremely pleased to have been put up with for so long, as I am now about to enter a period of recouping investments, during which I can handsomely repay such long endurance.

I think it matters more in terms of baseline relationship versus worrying over the attitude and approach to every moment.

IMO YMMV Void Where Prohibited.
